Rudy is a Chiweenie. The vet estimates he is six years old. For the past year Rudy lived with an older couple in Homosassa. This couple had medical issues so could no longer afford the costs of a having dog therefore gave him to 4 Lucky Dogs. Prior to being adopted by them Rudy was at another rescue organization for a few months and before that it is unknown.

Rudy loves blankets and sheets!!! One would even say he is obsessed with them. He will bury himself underneath them. He will rearrange them until he is comfortable. He will pull them around or out of places to be where he wants them. He will find blankets in other rooms and consider them his. He will wrap himself in them becoming tangled but always gets himself out like a magician. It is very amusing to watch how much he is fascinated with anything that is cotton and big. Sometimes his foster family plays the game of “Where is Rudy?” knowing he is hiding under a blanket and suddenly his little head will pop out saying “Here I am!”

Just like most dogs Rudy wants to be where people are – except when he wants to sleep, and he lets you know he REALLY wants to sleep! His foster family calls it “Rudy Time!” because he does not like to be disturbed. He will be active for a while then suddenly wants to be left alone to take a nap. Then once he takes that nap he is back to socializing with the family. And by socializing we mean he will be in the kitchen when food is being prepared, or lay on the dog bed next to someone on a computer, or run to voices he hears in another room wanting to be part of what is going on.

He is a great walker on a leash – steady and straight for up to 20 minutes (he has short legs!). And no one is a stranger to Rudy. Whether it the vet staff or the house cleaners or neighbors out on a walk he goes up to them insisting they pet him and will give them a kiss if he can squeeze one in. Rudy also loves car rides. He sits in the backseat looking out the window at the scenery or lays down patiently waiting to get to the destination.

The foster family learned that sometimes if they catch Rudy by surprise, he will nip at them. They attribute it to something in his past where he had to be defensive or protective. If they first offer a hand for him to sniff, then he is fine allowing them to pet him or pick him up. But if he is not prepared for them to touch him, or if he is wanting to sleep and be left alone, he will be reactive letting them know. The foster family has been able to work with him knowing what triggers the snipping and each day it has become less and less. His permanent family will need to realize that also. For that reason, we do not advise Rudy be adopted by a family that has young children living in the house or visiting the house since sometimes Rudy is unpredictable and younger kids may not understand his responsive nature.

Rudy is the type of dog who does ‘his own thing’ and is very independent. He gets along well with his foster sister (walks beside her, eats beside her, goes outside in the yard with her, etc.) but is more interested in doing what he wants rather than what she wants. We want it to be known that Rudy may or may not be a playmate for that dog because he is going to follow his own agenda and be with people or by himself rather than a sister/brother dog. But if that other dog is getting attention like sitting on a lap, he will be right there wanting to get on the lap also.

In the short time at his foster home Rudy has transformed from a very shy dog who never wanted to leave his crate to a dog that is relaxed in any part of the house. For example, he wags his tail when getting fed, greets family members, puts is paws on knees wanting to be petted, trots around the fenced in backyard, and follows people around. He LOVES the couch especially if he can find a blanket on it to add to the comfort Seeing how well he adjusted 4 Lucky Dogs is certain he will do the same in his new forever home.

Rudy is a loving happy dog that will make someone very glad to be his new mother or father. His adoption fee is $350 and this dog comes microchipped, neutered and up-to-date on shots and vaccines. You can apply at www.4luckydogs.org.
