Zander is a 7-year-old Pekingese that weighs about 22 pounds. He is a genuinely happy dog wagging his tail most of the day.

At his foster home he loves laying on the tile or sitting on the couch. His favorite activity is watching people. He wants to know what everyone in the house is doing and if he needs to be part of it. He enjoys toys – chewing on them, squeaking them, carrying them, throwing them around, etc. – anything that a dog can do with a toy Zander does.

Zander loves to be petted and his foster family has found the favorite spots where he likes to be scratched. The foster family also discovered Zander loves walking. He gets excited when his leash is being put on then walks steady and straight on the sidewalk. Of course, since he is a male, he likes marking a lot along the route!

He wants attention, closeness, and constant companionship, so will need someone to be home a lot to keep him company or take him with him/her. He adores children but it is best if he is only around older ones that can be gentle with him. When sleeping at night he wants to be his family’s bed or beside the bed on the floor. He has never been in a crate and does not like it.

Zander knows some words – outside, go pee, sit, and high five. It is amusing to see him do the high five with a human. His favorite foods are doggie ice cream, apples, and all kinds of treats. In social settings Zander is well-behaved sitting and watching all the motion. If something happens unexpected such as a stranger at the door Zander may be a bit vocal but Pekingese are known to be good guard dogs, so he considers himself protecting his people.

When asked if he wants to go outside Zander will wag his tail if the answer is yes. He may not ask on his own to go out, so the adopter needs to be willing to take him out on a regular basis. Zander insists on someone being outside with him for security when he goes to the bathroom. Therefore, a fenced-in yard is not required for this dog since the owner will need to always be with him.

Zander was surrendered by his owner due to her needing to move into a home that did not allow animals. He lived as an only dog with multiple cats and interacted with them well. He gets along with dogs his own size or smaller but can feel intimidated by dogs larger than him. The former owner said he is OK by himself in a home for around five hours at a time but any more than that he becomes very nervous and anxious.  

His adoption fee is $300. This dog comes microchipped, neutered, and up to date on shots and vaccines. He is currently being fostered in Plant City, FL. You can apply for him at www.4luckydogs.org.
