****Chapo will be available for adoption placement starting September 12. He was recently neutered so needs to go through the recovery period and have his stitches removed while still in the care of the foster. Applications can be submitted for him now, but he will not be able to be re-homed with the selected applicant until Sept 12 or after.**** Chapo is a 21-month-old 12-pound Rat Terrier mixed with short-haired Pointer. He is a genuinely happy dog. He gets extremely attached to humans which is good for someone who wants that compatibility. The ideal situation for Chapo is a family where someone is always available to give him the attention he craves. He likes to follow people around in the house. If a foster member is sitting, he is content to lay next to them but if that person gets up to walk around, he is travels with them throughout the house. Or if the person relocated too quickly, he explores each room looking for where they went. In the foster house where there is a dog bed in every room Chapo claims each as his own. After following his foster mom into a room, he jumps into the dog bed thinking “here I am!”. Otherwise, he curls up on sofas so he can be closer to his people. Chapo really enjoys being outside in the fenced-in yard at the foster family’s house. If he is not outside exploring or watching the action, he lays at the glass back door staring out at the yard imagining those smells. It would be great if Chapo’s new permanent home had a yard so he could enjoy the same activities. He loves walks and can walk for at least 30 minutes enjoying every moment of it smelling, peeing, and looking around. Any time he sees a collar or leash being picked up even if simply putting things away he gets very excited that he is going on a walk. The best fit for Chapo would be someone that likes to take dogs on walks. Playing with toys or chasing or play tug-o-war with his foster dog sister are things Chapo likes. When the foster dad throws a ball, he runs to go get it and brings it back. Squeaky toys also rank high in Chapo’s choices of play possibilities. Chapo does like kids but needs to live with older kids that understand his desires of type of play and interaction. Chapo likes to tell you exactly what is on his mind! For example, “I want this” or “please pay attention to me” or “you are hanging with the other foster dog instead of me”. He does so with little whines like talking. He will accept “no” if that is his what is he is told, but he will initially whine to ask the me-me-me question because sometimes the answer is actually yes. Also, Chapo likes to “help” around the house. If his foster mom has the Swifter out for cleaning, he is right there following the sweeper’s movements seeing what it is doing. Or if plasticware is being put away in a lower cabinet he is right here making sure everything is placed inside. When he does something funny or goofy at the foster home the family say “that’s Chapo!” because his personality is unique and shows so much enthusiasm for life. Chapo likes to be the center of attention in the house and gets jealous if another dog is getting attention. We therefore recommend Chapo be placed in a home as the only dog. He gets along with his foster dog sister and will follow her around or play with her so can be a companion dog. 4LD just wants to prepare a family that has an existing dog that Chapo is going to demand a lot of their time for his own needs. Chapo is house-trained and crate trained. He prefers sleeping in a regular bed with a human more than his crate but if he wants to take a nap on his own during the day, he will go into his crate to concentrate on sleep. His former owner says he knows words such as sit, stay, chill, wait, go eat, bring it back, and get down. She also said he is fearful of big dogs and the foster family has witnessed the same caution when he sees bigger dogs on walks. He came into 4 Lucky Dogs Rescue due to a change in his owner’s living arrangement where she could no longer keep him. He adjusted immediately to his foster home and based on the evaluation by his fosters he will fit in well with a family where there are plenty of people for him to follow. The average lifespan for this breed of dog is 15 years. Therefore, Chapo’s adopter will need to be prepared to care for him for around 13 more years so he will not have to move to a different home again. Chapo’s adoption fee is $400. This dog comes microchipped, neutered, and up to date on shots and vaccines. He is currently being fostered in the Plant City, FL area. *** 4 Lucky Dogs is not a shelter or facility where dogs can be viewed. All our rescue dogs are in loving foster homes throughout Florida. We do not usually adopt outside of the state of FL.
